Your HIV Test Was Positive —
Here’s What You Should Know

First, take a breath. We know this news can feel overwhelming, confusing, or scary. No matter what you’re feeling right now, you’re not alone. We’re here to support you every step of the way.

A positive HIV result does not mean your life is over. People with HIV live long, healthy lives - with relationships, families, careers, and goals, because treatment today is incredibly effective. Let’s walk through what happens next.

You Are Going to Be Okay
HIV is a manageable health condition. With daily medication, most people reach an “undetectable” viral load within a few months—meaning the virus is so low in your body that lab tests can’t find it. When you’re undetectable, you stay healthy and don’t transmit HIV to sexual partners (this is known as “U = U”). You still get to have a full, healthy future.

We’ll Confirm Your Result
A rapid test is the first step. The next step is a confirmatory lab test (a standard part of HIV care). You don’t need to do anything except show up—we’ll guide you through it.

You Can Start Treatment Right Away
HIV treatment usually starts the same day or within a few days of your confirmed result. Treatment comes in the form of a once‑a‑day pill or, for some people, long‑acting injections.
Starting treatment early:

  • protects your immune system

  • helps you feel better

  • lowers the virus in your body fast

  • gets you closer to becoming undetectable

You’ll Be Connected to a Care Team
Once you’re ready, we’ll introduce you to a care team that specializes in HIV and adolescent/young adult health. They’ll help with:

  1. treatment decisions

  2. lab tests

  3. mental health support

  4. insurance or medication coverage

  5. any questions you have about sex, relationships, or disclosure

You Don’t Have to Tell Anyone Before You’re Ready
You get to choose who knows your HIV status. Some people tell a trusted friend or partner; others take more time. We can help you think through conversations or keep things private. It’s completely up to you. It's important to know that once you’re on treatment and become undetectable, you won’t pass HIV to your partners. You can still have fulfilling relationships, intimacy, and a future family if you want one.

Your Feelings Are Valid
People react in all kinds of ways—shock, fear, anger, sadness, confusion, numbness. Whatever you’re feeling is normal. We’re here to talk, listen, and help you understand your next steps.

We’re With You Every Step of the Way
Your diagnosis is just one moment in your story—not the whole story. We’ll help you navigate treatment, connect you to care and support, and make sure you feel seen, respected, and cared for. You’re not facing this alone. We’ve got you.
